Anaphylaxis Auto-Injectors: Safe Handling, Storage and Use
In this section, we explore how to safely handle, check, and use adrenaline auto-injectors such as Jext and EpiPen. Understanding how these devices work and how to manage them correctly is essential for responding effectively to a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
Understanding Training vs Real Auto-Injectors
During this course, you may practise using a training auto-injector. These devices are designed for safe learning and simulation. However, it is important to familiarise yourself with real auto-injectors, as they are what you will use in an actual emergency.
Types of Auto-Injectors
Common brands include Jext and EpiPen. While they may look slightly different, they operate in a very similar way. They are available in different dosages, such as:
- 150 micrograms – typically prescribed for children
- 300 micrograms – typically prescribed for adults
Always ensure you are using the correct device as prescribed.
Checking the Packaging and Contents
Auto-injectors are usually supplied in a cardboard box. Before use, you should always:
- Check the correct dosage
- Confirm the expiry date
- Record the batch or lot number
- Review the manufacturer’s instructions
In workplaces, it is essential to keep a clear record of all auto-injectors, including expiry dates and serial numbers, to ensure they are safe and ready for use.
Opening and Inspecting the Device
When opening the packaging:
- Remove the device carefully from the box
- Locate the instructions leaflet and read it
- Ensure the auto-injector is stored in its protective plastic tube
The protective case helps to:
- Prevent accidental activation
- Protect the device from damage
- Shield it from light exposure
Safe Storage and Accessibility
Auto-injectors should be:
- Stored in a clearly labelled kit or container
- Kept in a secure but easily accessible location
- Protected from unauthorised access
If no kit is available, the device can be carried safely in a bag or protective case.
How to Handle an Auto-Injector Safely
When handling the device:
- Hold it correctly and follow the instructions on the label
- Do not place your thumb over either end
- Only remove the safety cap when you are ready to use it
If the safety cap is removed accidentally, it can usually be replaced safely, provided the device has not been activated.
After Use and Safety Features
Once the auto-injector has been used:
- A needle guard will automatically cover the needle
- This reduces the risk of accidental injury
After checking or use, always:
- Return the device to its protective tube
- Store it securely in the designated kit or location
Key Safety Reminders
- Always check expiry dates regularly
- Keep clear records in workplaces
- Ensure quick access in an emergency
- Only use when required for anaphylaxis
Being confident in handling an auto-injector can make a life-saving difference in a critical situation.
